Jun Watabe (Clarinet), Matthew Dane (Viola) and Susan Ellinger (Piano) play works by Brahms, Schumann, and Gershwin.
Praised for her “refined, poised and singular” vision, pianist Susan Ellinger has performed extensively as both a soloist and chamber musician, presenting recitals at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Auditorium, Caramoor Music Center, Harvard University, Oberlin Conservatory, Tanglewood Music Festival, the Taos School of Music and many more. She has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Peabody Conservatory Orchestra, in regular concerts with The Chelsea Chamber Players in New York City, and as a featured soloist in a series of concerts with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra with conductor Marin Alsop. Susan Ellinger has won top prizes both as a soloist and chamber musician at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Manhattan School of Music and at age 13 was awarded the National Baldwin Junior Keyboard Achievement Award presenting solo recitals in Washington DC for the Music Teachers Association of America.
As an orchestral soloist, Matthew Dane’s varied repertoire has included Feldman Rothko Chapel, Shulman Theme and Variations, Vaughan Williams Suite for Viola and Orchestra and Flos Campi, Vanhal Concerto, Mozart Sinfonia Concertante, Telemann Concerto, Rolla Rondo, Stamitz Concerto in D, Bach Brandenburg Concerto #6, Strauss Don Quixote, and John Ferguson Christus Cycle with choir. As a chamber collaborator Matt has performed with many ensembles, including the Colorado Quartet, the Dorian Wind Quintet, Houston-based CONTEXT, Athelas Ensemble (Denmark), the Fischer Duo, the Portland String Quartet, Orchestra 2001 (performing Boulez Le Marteau Sans Maitre), the Miami Quartet, members of the Brentano Quartet, and Tom Hagerman of Devotchka, among others.
A refined musician, Jun Watabe has appeared as featured soloist in many national and international scenes to rave reviews. He travels across the country for concerts and lectures at conferences and universities. Watabe also lives an unusual career of single reed doubling with two completely different instruments-the clarinet and the saxophone. The diverse natures of the two instruments serve to enhance his artistry and refine his musical common sense, and at the same time make his musical interpretations and performances unique.
